Overview
The name given to two dramatically different cars, separated by a 15-year production gap, the original BMW M6 was only given this shortened title in Japan and North America, but was known here as the M635 CSi, and stayed in production from 1983 to 1989. From then up to 2005, there was no true successor to the M635 CSi - the second-fastest production BMW ever, behind the original M1. But that 16-year gap in M6 history ended in 2005, when a variant of the new 6 Series was introduced, fitted with the same automated manual gearbox and V10 engine as the massively-popular M5 of the time. Intended to make coupe and convertible options available for those who might otherwise have bought an M5, the principle was carried through to the introduction of the next 6 Series, in 2012. Now offered as both two- and four-door coupes, as well as a convertible, the M6 was further developed by BMW Motorsport to become the successor to the Z4 GT3, a move that saw the car compete in sports car racing championships in Japan, Italy and America.
