The Ferrari 288 GTO might be a comparatively unheralded entry into the long list of La Scuderia’s classic cars, but it’s what it laid down the blueprint for that makes it important. That’s because it’s regarded as the prancing horse’s first true supercar.
The letters stand for ‘Gran Turismo Omologato’, which tells us that this car was built to meet FIA’s Group B racing regulations which required a minimum production run of 200 of all participating cars. When the FIA rejected Ferrari’s idea of rebuilding its existing 308 GTB/GTS/GTBI/GTSI model, the 288 GTO was its answer. While its lines are classic Pininfarina, the mechanics borrow unashamedly from F1, most notably its longitudinally-mounted engine sitting over the rear axle.
