So when we point out that the Ferrari 599 GTB/SA Aperta was EVO magazine’s car of the year for 2007, does that still carry any weight? The motoring writers’ verdict was swung by performance figures suggesting that Ferrari had achieved its stated objective to create a front-engined Grand Tourer whose performance could stand in comparison with the iconic F40. That’s despite weighing more than half as much again as the supercar.
It achieved this remarkable feat by transplanting the engine from the F40’s successor, the Enzo, into this car’s long front end. A six-litre engine driving the rear wheels should be a recipe for all kinds of fun - not all of it intended - but the 599 GTB/SA Aperta is made deliberately slightly back-heavy to stop the rear wheels from gaining a mind of their own. However, what gave this car its speed was the slick, F1 semi-automatic gearbox which earned such rave reviews that it left the manual option offered way back in its wake sales-wise.
