Overview
The 612 Scaglietti was the prancing horse’s follow-up as a four-seater grand tourer to the 456. The car took its name from the founder of the coachbuilding company which started out as a body repair shop across the road from the Ferrari factory, and in its early days, repaired some of Enzo Ferrari’s racing cars. After the 360 Modena, the 612 Scaglietti was only Ferrari’s second all-aluminium car. It’s one car whose numbering does not correspond to the dimensions of the engine, which in this case is the 5.7-litre V12 first seen in the 575 Superamerica. The six-speed automated manual paddle-shift transmission developed for F1 and adapted for the 360, was offered as an option, along with a six-speed manual box.
In 2008, Ferrari announced that the 612 would only be available as a special-order, bespoke car, with a variety of options for everything from the brake callipers to the interior leather finish. Having been introduced for and refined from experience with this car, this ‘one-to-one’ order system was subsequently extended right across the Ferrari range.
