The California T was a thorough revamp of Ferrari’s previous California model, the initial referencing the most important aspect of the newer car - its new twin-turbocharged engine. So the new California’s engine was downsized by 10 per cent, but the turbos gave it 15 per cent more power, taking it to 552bhp. In a new development, the torque available is limited in the lowest three gears, as Ferrari’s engineers wanted to make the car feel more like it was normally aspirated at lower speeds. Stiffer springs and quicker steering were also added to the package, addressing criticisms of the previous car’s relative lack of pliability, and bringing it up to the standard of that car when specified with the optional special handling modifications.
Ferrari rang the changes after finding that buyers of this car’s predecessor were mainly new to the brand and different from those who lap up its mid-engined products. More power in higher gears helps the California T fulfil its brief as a grand tourer, meaning there’s little need to work the gears or hoof the accelerator when you want to press on. In summary, Autocar said the car was a match for rivals from Bentley and Mercedes, but now came with greater helpings of the character drivers usually associate with a Ferrari.
