The Ferrari F40 needs no introduction, even 3 decades after it first touched tarmac it’s still one of the most evocative, raw and exciting vehicles ever gifted to the automotive community.
Rising from the ashes of Ferrari’s stillborn Group B Rally monster the 288 GTO Evoluzione, the F40 is the definition of spartan performance. Featuring a Carbon, Kevlar and Aluminium body, designed by the legendary Pininfarina, the car weighed in at a featherlight 1100kg dry.
Mated to an enlarged version of the 288 GTO’s flat plane crank, twin-turbocharged V8 the car produced an alleged 470-480bhp (US and ROW cars varied due to differing emissions regulations), although in reality the cars developed significantly more than this. The interior featured little in the way of air conditioning, no carpets, a felt dashboard, no radio and exposed Kevlar body panels – Ferrari was utterly singular in their pursuit of performance, and the end result was nothing short of extraordinary.
We live in an age of a power arms race amongst manufacturers, 1000hp is becoming relatively normal and yet there are very few modern cars that hold a candle to the utter brutality with which the F40 deploys its monolithic power. A poster car for the ages, every person with petrol in their blood heralds this this is being one of the greatest of all time.
