Plenty of room for four, power delivered to all four wheels, and not least, a V12 engine producing 651bhp, the Ferrari FF is another car with talents so wide that if it hadn’t actually been created, you probably wouldn’t believe it. The first all-wheel-drive model to emerge from the Maranello factory, the car’s title stemmed from the four-wheel drive, plus its four seats. The engine in the FF was directly descended from that in the Enzo, but it was the system used to deploy power to all the wheels which was this car’s really novel feature. When the front wheels detect the need for more traction, the crank sends power to a secondary gearbox under the engine. With only two speeds, the wheel speeds are controlled by two continually slipping clutches. This brings the benefits of four-wheel drive without the usual considerable extra weight. The Ferrari FF played to the strengths of its design by offering a great driving position and steering that makes it a cinch to point the car’s nose where you want to go. The adaptive damping is controlled by a now-customary steering wheel-mounted Manettino dial.
