There is no point in having a heritage as rich as Lo Scuderia if you don’t dip back into it from time to time, and give modern-day buyers a chance to experience those old-school racing thrills for themselves. That’s what Ferrari did in 2018, introducing a line of cars to be known as ‘Icona’, which were intended as modern-day takes on classic Ferrari models. And it kicked off the series with the Monza SP1 and SP2. With no roof or windows, onlookers can instead feast their eyes on the car’s purposeful curves. The SP1 denoted a single-seat car while the SP2 could accommodate a passenger, while the interior could be specced to the buyer’s preferences. And as buyers were strictly limited to one choice each, no one could boast the ultimate in one-upmanship by having two identical cars. Tiny tweaks to the engine only previously seen in the 812 Superfast took it up to 799bhp, all of which is delivered to the rear wheels, and fed through a seven-speed twin-clutch transmission.
Some reviewers argued that this expression of Ferrari thrills in their purest form would only ever be seen on a racetrack, and so wasn’t exactly sensible. But they were even more disconcerted when they took to the track, only to find that “it rides more expensively than most German luxury saloon cars”. However, “when it finds traction the acceleration is genuinely frightening”, Top Gear magazine’s man said.
