Overview
After the 650S had done an effective job in giving fresh impetus to McLaren’s sales figures, its success prompted the Woking company to look even more closely at improving things under the skin. Saving weight and improving the performance of the brakes were the main areas focused upon, so the engine saw several new lighter weight components used. Sat over the drivetrain was the lightweight, carbon fibre monocell body first used for the 650S. But again, the Longtail designation saw the car’s length extended by 33mm, or 1.3 inches, compared with its predecessor. The twin-turbocharged engine was refined from the one used in the MP4-12C, but tweaked to produce 50 extra horsepower and achieve the devilish figure of 666bhp towards the top of the rev range.
