Overview
“Most innovative”, “most useable” and “most aerodynamically efficient” were three of the superlatives attached to the McLaren GT when it was released in October 2019. Yet the car just escaped being swallowed up by the teeth of the pandemic which has since made that month seem to many like a lifetime away. But then, in its outlook the McLaren GT differs greatly from the lion’s share of its other models. The GT is a longer car than its siblings, and the focus is on aerodynamic efficiency rather than making a car that looks like a speed monster. The four-litre, twin-turbo V8 engine is carried over from the 720S, but it delivers more of its power lower down in the rev range, and channels it through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. McLaren claimed this car boasted the most sophisticated infotainment system it had ever used to date, with controls modelled on those we’re familiar with from our smartphones. Handling was also reckoned by critics to be a strong suit of the GT, with an almost total lack of body roll contributing to a more agile feel overall.
