Overview
Realising that not everyone wants to drive with the wick turned right up all the time, even in its fastest cars, Mercedes put a smaller three-litre engine in the E63 AMG to produce the E43 AMG when it gave the original a working over in 2017. Instead of its sibling’s 603bhp, the latter’s output stops just short of 400bhp, channelled through all four wheels with a 30:70 front/rear split, and kept moving up the range courtesy of a nine-speed auto gearbox.
Being an AMG of course, the suspension is on the firm side, but critics reckoned there was much more appeal in this car as a long-distance tourer, coming mainly thanks to its four-wheel drive, which brought some predictability in an area where most rivals traded on their unpredictability. However, the E63 AMG was also given a revamp at the same time, and this was the full-fat, 603bhp real deal (at least in S spec). Here though, the talk was all about the torque - 627lb/ft of it, on call from as low down as 2,500rpm, and put down through all four wheels. At the opposite extreme, the E63 AMG has a ‘Drift’ mode, which lets the driver get sideways and experience the full sensation of that burning rubber smell.
