Overview
The Mercedes GLC may have been a little late to get the party invitation marked ‘upmarket, affordable compact SUVs’ - but it finally got a UK launch in 2015, a whole seven years after Stuttgart decided that the UK wasn’t among the target markets for its predecessor, the GLK. Meanwhile, many would-be direct rivals, such as the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Range Rover Evoque moved in and cleaned up. It’s the high-rise equivalent of the C-Class, and is available with a choice of three petrol and one diesel engine. Two AMG variants, both with a four-litre V8 plant, top the range. Confusingly, though, all GLCs bar the range-opening 220d model are tagged ‘AMG Line’, and every one has a comprehensive kit list covering heated front seats, 10.25-inch display and infotainment control screen and climate control.
The GLC AMG 63 S achieved what its designers set out to do and bagged the record as the fastest SUV to ever lap the Nurburgring circuit, and it’s a capable off-roader too, although better for having the optional Off-Road package that adds a type of hill descent control system, increased ride height and changes to the driver assistance systems.
