The cherries on top of the icing on a very big cake. That’s how you might describe the AMG-treated versions of Mercedes’ biggest luxury saloons, the S-Class. These limo-type cars were often bought for use by people lucky enough not to have to drive themselves but employ someone else to do it, which a shame because the only way to really enjoy the massive pulling power under the bonnet, delivered between a generous 2250rpm and 3750rpm, is from behind the wheel. The S65 AMG has an even more powerful, twin-turbocharged six-litre engine - in fact, it’s one of the most powerful you can buy in any executive car. But it’s the all-pervasive new tech that singles out both the S63 and S65, most of it accessed via a 12.3-inch colour touch screen. The long wheelbase means back seat passengers have masses of space - there’s even enough for Mercedes to have allowed buyers to specify an extra row of seats if needed. Driver and passengers are unlikely to get flustered no matter how tricky the road ahead gets, as the S63 and S65 have a Magic Ride Control feature, which uses a camera to scan the road in front and automatically send information to the adaptive suspension to allow it to adjust itself. There is, though, also a Sport mode which deactivates all this wizardry and puts you more in control.
