The 981 Cayman - the hard-top version of the Boxster - was warmly welcomed, and its appeal has only grown since, especially as owners pep them up with help from Porsche tuning parts. “The 981 Cayman was – and remains – a benchmark car, and when it arrived in 2012 came closer than ever to stepping on a 911’s toes”, reckoned CAR magazine. Lower and sleeker than earlier Caymans, the 981 model came close to a 911 performance and driving fun-wise. The entry-level car has a 2.7-litre flat six engine good for 271bhp which is small by Porsche standards, but “by no means a poor relation to faster versions, still plenty quick enough, and soul-stirring when you wring it out on a country road”, according to the CAR critics. Perks of opting for the Cayman S included a slightly de-tuned version of the 3.4-litre, six-cylinder engine that opens the 911 Carrera range, bigger alloy wheels and bi-xenon headlights. Both cars could be specified with a six-speed manual or the PDK dual-clutch auto gearbox.
Finally, a GTS version sat atop the range, which added the Porsche Active Suspension Management and Sport Chrono adjustable damping and throttle control to the standard menu. Good for 325bhp, it meant “the GTS does drive and feel like a very special car”, reckoned EVO magazine. “This flat-six motor is truly elastic, with a broad powerband and a scintillating soundtrack,” they added.
