Overview
We have to admit that the entry-level Carrera version of this enduring classic follows the Porsche pattern of being eminently capable enough to meet most drivers’ needs. The three-litre engine is boosted by twin turbos, and the maximum 380bhp comes on stream at 6,500rpm. But more importantly, the maximum torque starts to feed in from as low as 1,950rpm and keeps coming all the way up to 5,000rpm. The only gearbox offered was an eight-speed auto which, as is now very familiar, applies the power to the rear wheels. The engine, now more mid- than rear-mounted, has helped give the Carrera excellent balance, helped by selecting manual gear changes so that only the lower ratios are used on busier town and city roads.
