Overview
The rumours had circulated for a long time before Rolls-Royce finally announced, in September 2015, that it was working on plans to produce an SUV model. A few months later, spy shots emerged of a model undergoing testing, but it was another two-and-a-half years before Rolls-Royce finally confirmed that the car was ready to go into production, and would be named the Cullinan. The name comes from that given to the largest rough diamond ever discovered, and Rolls-Royce and its owner, BMW, were clearly looking to mine the continued growth of the SUV market around the world.
The Cullinan has a variety of driving modes - including one for off-road which raises the suspension height by 40mm - permanent four-wheel drive, and a four-wheel steer system which aids manoeuvrability at low speeds. Engine and gearbox options are kept simple - just a 6.75-litre V12 and ZF eight-speed auto. These include the Spofec N-Tronic engine management modification which boosts maximum engine torque to a massive 1,010Nm at 1,800rpm for real rocket-ship performance.
