One of the very best is the 456. Available with six-speed manual (456GT) and four-speed automatic (456GTA) transmissions, they feed the power to a 5.5-litre V12 engine producing 436bhp, which can hit a claimed 192mph - a top speed only bettered by the Porsche 959 among four-seater cars. A composite body and aluminium panels are welded to the chassis using a special filler which is extra-light yet very strong.

A 456M variant with better aerodynamics and a clearer interior layout came along in 1998. This was the first production road car to feature an all-carbon bonnet. Power and torque were unchanged but the cylinders fired in a different order to give a smoother-running engine. Nearly 3,300 456s were eventually produced, the model bowing out with a run of just 30 cars individually customised to buyers' own requirements, but based on a 456M GT ordered and personally specified by F1 legend Michael Schumacher.
