Desired by true Ferrari aficionados for their scarcity as much as their distinctiveness, the Ferrari 550 and 575 grand tourers saw Maranello return to a classic front-engined, rear-wheel drive configuration after nearly a quarter of a century. In that time, the Berlinetta Boxer had become the standard, and in the process had made the mid-engined layout Ferrari's go-to, which had been steadily refined and reworked. As its name suggests, the Ferrari 550 packs a 5.5-litre engine, this time with its 12 cylinders adopting the more conventional V configuration, and based heavily on the underpinnings of the Ferrari 456. The power was channelled through a six-speed gearbox with a limited slip differential to help the wheels keep traction as the power was put down.
