Just under two-thirds of these were the former, which had three years head-start over the folding-top model. Pininfarina pulled out an ace with its design work on the GranTurismo, Autocar describing it as "big and ravishingly handsome - everything a GT should be."

A more lavishly-equipped 'S' model followed in 2008, swapping the original car's 4.2-litre engine for a 4.7 V8, making it the most powerful road-legal Maserati produced to date, the power fed through the same six-speed automated manual gearbox as the Ferrari F430. The final verdict comes again from Autocar, which called the GranTurismo "a truly desirable car," before concluding: "For the first time in a long time, you no longer need to make excuses to buy and run a Maserati."
