Overview
The 599 GTO is the road-homologated version of the 599XX, which was developed specifically for the track, and for a time was the fastest car to complete a lap of the legendary Nordschleife, the long-track circuit at Germany’s Nürbürgring. Both cars feature a 6.0-litre V12 engine capable of producing 720bhp.
From the earliest stages of the two cars’ development, Maranello’s engineers worked to make the chassis set-up and the input provided by the electronic controls as closely matched as possible. This was added to by the second generation of Ferrari’s magnetorheological suspension control system which, instead of having moving parts, uses a type of oil that contains microscopic pieces of magnetic particles, which provide millisecond responses to road conditions and the driver’s own actions. The result is a flatter, more stable ride on gravel or slippery road surfaces.
The car also got a new gearbox, with an up or down change time of 60 milliseconds, F1-inspired carbon-ceramic brakes with crossed drilled rotors, and a new race exhaust system.
