So in the 456's place came the Ferrari 612, which was instead a genuine four-seater, with room in the back even for two adults. Only the second Ferrari with an all-aluminium shell - after the 360 Modena of 1999-2005 - the 612 had its aluminium body welded onto its space frame chassis, which was manufactured by American specialist Alcoa.

Under the bonnet sits a six-litre V12 engine, pumping out 533bhp, and even though the car weighed over 4,000lbs, it could shoot from rest to 60 in four seconds. A choice of six-speed manual and automated (paddle shift) manual gearboxes was offered, the latter a refined version of the F1 transmission fitted in the 360. Customisation options for the Ferrari 612 were extensive, and from 2008 it was the launch model for the marque's 'One-To-One' personalisation programme, with individual options extended beyond the bodywork to all aspects of the car's interior, including the upholstery.
